Bang Bang! enters the Rs 100 cr club

Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif starrer Bang Bang! has grossed Rs 109. 49 crore in just five days in the domestic market. Reportedly, this makes Bang Bangthe fourth film on All Time Top 25 Opening Weekend's list. While these might be good reasons for the cast and crew of the film to rejoice and media outlets to go gaga, the truth of the matter is a little more complicated.

During the film's publicity phase, the film's producer, Fox Star Studios revealed that the film has been made on a staggering budget of Rs 140 crore, which includes the costs of prints and advertisements, making it the costliest film of Bollywood.

According to Talking Movies.com, the music rights of the film were bought by Zee Musicfor Rs 5 crore. The expenditure on prints and advertisements amounted to Rs 20 crore, while the production cost itself is reportedly as high as Rs 120 crore. Originally, Bang Bangwas supposed to be made on a budget of between Rs 85-90 crore, however, during the shoot itself, the film went over budget by Rs 50 crore. The numerous location changes and the fact that the film was shot in foreign locations like Greece, Abu Dhabi and Thailand probably didn't help the budget.

Some reports suggest that by the time Bang Bang! was finally completed, its budget had gone up to Rs 150 crore. Roshan was apparently not happy with this, but considering how the actor himself charged 50 percent more than his usual fee for this film, we're not sure what grounds he had to complain. Roshan took Rs 30 crore as his fee, which is the highest amount any actor has ever charged for a Bollywood film.

While the actor has made his share of the money, Fox Star Studios isn't particularly close to making a profit even though Bang Bang! has made Rs 100 crore. The film is still doing business, but collections are steadily dropping. The five-day Diwali weekend is over andBang Bang!'s Monday collection was a meagre Rs 15. 36 crore. To really qualify for the category of a hit, Bang Bang! first needs to cross the Rs 120 crore or Rs 150 crore mark, depending on which is a more accurate number for the film's budget. Until that happens, the film will not have made the amount that has been invested in it, which is why a profit seems to be at a distant dream at this point.
However, the Vijay Singh, CEO of Fox Star Studios, seems quite upbeat with Bang Bang!'s performance.
"Today is a very special day for us at Fox Star Studios," said Singh. "When we set out to make Bang Bang!, the 100 crore club felt like a distant dream and today it has crossed the Rs 100 crore milestone in India in just over 4 days!"
This isn't the first time that a film that has done good business at the box office and reached the coveted Rs 100 crore mark but failed to recover the money invested in it. In 2011, Ra.One had an excellent opening Diwali weekend. The film's collection dropped 84 percent in the second week and around 90 percent in the third week.
It ultimately made approximately Rs 170 crore at the box office, which is very impressive. Unfortunately, likeBang Bang!, this Shah Rukh Khan-starrer reportedly cost Rs 150 crore to make, and as a result, despite the good performance at the box office, the film didn't actually make much money for those who bought the film and distributed it. In Bang Bang!'s case, Fox Star Studios has both produced and distributed the film.
Bang Bang! has another week to add to its numbers before Shah Rukh Khan's Diwali release, Happy New Year, hits theatres. If the numbers are any indication, Bang Bang! is struggling. even without any stiff competition. Fox Star Studios claims that the earnings from the domestic and international markets add up to Rs 200 crore. However, by their own admission, these are gross rather than nett earnings.
